Power-On Indication

When turning on the Escort Passport S55, it will go through a sequence of alerts. If any bands have been disabled, a tone and corresponding display message will alert you that one or more bands have been turned off. This is great to alert of any bands that are not working. Normally this shouldn’t be a problem.

After the startup sequence is complete, the display will show Highway, Auto or Auto No X to indicate which sensitivity mode is selected. If you prefer, you may program your device for a faster power-on sequence.

Adjust the volume is simple by just pressing and hold the VOL button.

This MUTE button allows you to silence the audio which you may find annoying. All you need to do is simply press this button during an alert.

The Passport S55 also includes ESCORT’s patented AutoMute feature. Once the radar detector alerts you to a radar encounter at your selected volume level, it automatically reduces the volume to a lower level.

Do note the difference between the Mute and AutoMute features.

For the Mute features, you have to manually press the button to mute the alert while in the AutoMute features, the alert tone will be automatically reduced to a level pre-set by you. You also have the options of turning the AutoMute feature off.

Display Brightness

The Escort Passport S55 provided 4 options for display brightness and a Full Dark Mode as well. To set the display brightness, simply press the BRT button.

Full Dark Mode

Under this mode, no light will be seen and only audible alerts and SmartCord alerts will notify you of detected signals.

This mode is especially useful at night when you do not want to be seen as having a radar detector.

Radar Sensitivity

The SEN button on this radar detector  allows you to select your preferred radar sensitivity: Highway, Auto or Auto No X. However, in general, ESCORT recommends Auto for everyday driving.

For Highway setting, the Passport S55 will detect all radar signals on all bands at maximum range.

On the other hand, on Auto setting, it will continuously analyze all incoming signals and intelligently adjust the sensitivity circuits, providing long-range warning with minimal false alarms.

As for Auto No X, it works the same Auto mode but without the X band working.

WARNING: Do not use PASSPORT S55 in Auto No X unless you are absolutely certain that there are no traffic radar guns using X band in your area.

Alert Tones

The Escort Passport S55 uses a Geiger counter-type sound to indicate the signal strength  and type of radar signal being encountered. When you encounter radar, a distinct audible alert will sound and will increase as the signal gets stronger. This allows you to judge the distance from the signal source without taking your eyes off of the road.

Each band has a distinct tone for easy identification:

X band = beep tone

K band = brap tone

Ka band = double-brap tone

Laser = solid brap tone

Pop = solid brap tone

Since laser signals are a possible threat no matter how weak, the Passport S55 alerts you to all laser signals with a full laser alert.

Escort Passport S55 Reviews – Signal-Stress Meter

Continuing our Escort Passport S55 reviews, do take note this radar detector offers three different settings for displaying alerts namely standard, SpecDisplay and ExpertMeter.

Escort Passport S55 Radar Detector Reviews

Under the Standard meter option, you’ll be shown information on a single radar signal. When the S%% detects radar, it will display the band of the radar (X, K or Ka) and a bar graph of the signal’s strength. When laser is detected, the display will simply read “Laser.” However, if there are multiple signals present, the detector will determine which one is the most important threat to display.

Passport S55 Review

Under the SpecDisplay option, which is basically an advanced display for Experienced,  it will display the actual numeric radar frequency being received. Do take note that for this option, even long-time detector users will require some time to get familiar with this new level of information about detected signals. You’re advise to stick to the standard more when you first start to use this detector. To use the SpecDisplay mode, you must select it in Preferences.

Similarly, the ExpertMeter option is also designed for the advanced detector user. In this mode, the S55 will simultaneously tracks up to eight radar signals (two Ka-band, two K-band and four X-band) and shows each signal along with a bar graph of its strength.

This Expert meter mode can help you spot a change in your normal driving environment (e.g., a traffic radar unit being operated in an area where there are normally other signals present). To use this mode, you must select it in Preferences.

Using Preferences

To enter Preferences simply press and hold the VOL and BRT buttons down for 2 seconds. To exit Preferences, simply wait a few seconds without pressing a button.

The unit will display Complete to confirm your selection(s).

For example:

To turn the AutoMute feature off:

1) Enter Preferences by pressing and holding both the VOL and BRT buttons. The S55 will display PROGRAM.

2) Next press the VOL button to scroll through categories to AutoMute.

3) Since the factory setting is for AutoMute to be on, the S55 will show AutoMute as ON.

4) Press the BRT button to change from ON to OFF.

5) To complete this change simply wait a few seconds without pressing any button. The unit will display Complete and return to normal operation.

Restoring Detector Settings

To restore the S55 radar detector to its original factory settings, press and hold VOL and BRT while turning the power on. A RESET message will display, acknowledging the reset.

Interpreting Alerts

Although the Escort Passport S55 has a comprehensive warning system, only experience will teach you what to expect from your detector and how to interpret what it tells you.

From our Escort Passport S55 reviews, the specific type of radar being used, the type of transmission (continuous or instant-on) and the location of the radar source will affect the alerts you receive. The following examples will give you an introduction to understanding your detector’s warning system for radar and laser alerts.

Types of Alerts

Peace of Mind – TSR

The Escort Passport  S55 includes a new boost in anti-falsing software to eliminate excessive alerts from erroneous X and K band sources, such as traffic flow monitoring systems. These systems, which are becoming more widely used in several countries, generate K band signals to measure the flow of traffic on a given road.

Unfortunately, most detectors see this as a real threat and will alert you to it unnecessarily. With the new proprietary software, the TSR in S55 will intelligently sorts, ranks and rejects these types of false alarms automatically. The result is ultimate protection without excessive false alarms.

Escort Live App – Online Interaction

The Passport S55 is fully compatible with the ESCORT Live smartphone application With the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology, you are now connected with the award-winning mobile app – Escort Live.

The Escort Live app allows you to interact with other users and alert you in real-time of any speed-traps reported by other users. For example, when driving in a certain road, other users ahead of you may notice a new speed trap by the law enforcement officer and alerted other users on this new threat. When you pass-by that location, the app will  automatically warn you of this new speed trap ahead of time thereby, saving you from getting any ticket.

Additionally, if there is any change in posted speed limit, you’ll be notified to keep you aware and ticket-free.

Using SmartCord

The Passport S55 comes with a special SmartCord that has a power-on indicator, a bright alert light that warns of radar or laser, and a convenient MUTE button right on the plug. It’s perfect for any car where reaching the detector’s MUTE button on the windshield is a stretch.

For discreet night driving, put the S55 in Full Dark mode and use the SmartCord for your visual alerts. Other drivers won’t know you have a detector.

Mounting Tips

The best place to mount the Passport S55 will be the center on windshield and between driver and passenger. You also need to ensure clear view of road ahead and to avoid windshield wipers and heavily tinted areas.
