We shall begin the Cobra ESD 7570 review by looking at the various buttons / indicators on the device. You can refer to the picture on the left for details (Click on the picture to enlarge it).

First, on the right hand side, at the rear we have the 12DC power jack which basically lets you plug in the power. To power up the Cobra ESD 7570, you need to plug the cigarette lighter adapter on the power cord into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter. The device does not have its own battery and once you unplug it, it stops working.

Do take note if you have a vehicle that continues to supply power to the cigarette lighter even after the engine is off, you need to unplug your detector to avoid draining your car battery.

Also on the right in front, you have the On-Off/Volume control button. To switch on the device, simply rotate the control clockwise and you can also adjust the volume accordingly. Once the detector is on, the LED in the lower left corner of the screen will be on, indicating the device is now ON.

Note: For details on how to select a radar detector, read about our Radar Detector Guide.

DIM Button

Next, we have the DIM button which is located on the top right hand side. The function of this button is to control the data display brightness. There are 3 level of brightness you can choose from – dark, dim and bright. To change the brightness setting, simply press the button repeatedly to your preferred brightness. If you are adjusting this for the first time, I’ll suggest doing it once in the daytime and once at night. Doing so will give you some idea on the level of brightness you get in these 2 different environment.

In the Dark mode, the LED will blink slowly to indicate that power is on. The factory setting is bright.

Mute Button

The next button we’ll be looking at is the center, top button – the MUTE button. The function of this button is simple – to mute the alert audio.

When the detector has detected a signal, the alert audio will come on and by pressing this mute button, it will momentarily mute the audio; pressing this button the second time will bring back the alert audio. A very simple operation – press once to mute it, press it again to turn on the audio.

The Cobra ESD 7570 also has auto mute mode which will automatically reduce the audio volume of all alerts after 4 seconds as long as the signal is detected. This setting is always on under factory setting.

In order to turn the auto mute mode off, simply press and release the mute button while no alert is occurring; you will hear a single beep once you press the button.

To turn this mode on again, press and release the button while no alert is occurring. You should hear 2 beep audio when this is set.

Highway / City Mode

The Cobra ESD 7570 has the ability to switch between highway and city mode. The CITY button is located on the top left hand side of the device.

The default factory setting is Highway mode. In order to change to City mode, simple press and release the button once and you’ll hear the beep once while the display will shown “c” indicating it is in City mode. To change back to Highway mode, simply press the button once again and you’ll hear 2 beeps.

So why do you need to change to City mode? Doing so will eliminate many false alarms such as signals from microwave, towers and automatic door openers when driving through city area. When on City mode, all X band audio alerts will be delayed at lower signal strength.

This is located on the top rear left and it basically detect laser signals for 360 degree.

Cobra ESD 7570 reviews

The display is perhaps one of the most important features of this device which you need to understand what they mean.

The “X/K and Ka” indicators are simply radar indicators, while the “L’ is laser and the “V/S” is the VG-2 and safety alert indicator.

On the lower display, you have level 1 indicator and power indicator. Next is the level 2 & 3 indicator and finally the level 4 & 5 indicator. The city mode “C” indicator in located on the lower left side.

The speaker is located on the top center and its function is to give you audio alert whenever any signal is detected.

VG-2 Alert

What exactly is VG-2? Well, when enforcing speeding law, the police uses the radar detector detectors (RDDs) to inform them of any users of radar detectors. Your Cobra ESD 7570 has the ability to detect signals from VG-2 RDDs and will alert you once they detect similar device being used around your vehicle.

You need not worry about the presence of other RDDs as your detector is invisible to it; you also the option to turn on the VG-2 alert or switch it off.

After looking at the buttons and indicators, next we’ll see how and where to mount the device.

The best place to mount the Cobra ESD 7570 will be at the center of the vehicle on the front windshield; you also want to make sure that it is positioned as low as possible and there is no obstruction to the front or rear; another option will be to mount it on the dashboard.

The device’s ability to detect radar or laser also depends on a number of factors. For example, the following objects below will weaken incoming signal, making your detector less effective:-

  • Dark tinting at the top of the windshield
  • Mirrored sun screens
  • Windshield wipre blades
  • Heated windshield currently available on some vehicles

Some users have complained about the unit falling form their windshield but I do not have this problem so far.

Cobra ESD 7570 Review – Radar Alert

Cobra ESD7570 review

The Cobra ESD 7570 gives you the option on the alert you choose – X, K or Ka bands. The default setting is all three bands are on.

When a radar signal is detected (X,K or Ka), the alert tone will come on and the tone will beep faster as you approach to the source. The visual display will also appear (in flashing LEDs) indicating the type and strength of the signal. With this alert, you’ll have sufficient time to slow down and avoid getting any ticket.

If the device detects a laser signal, the ‘L” display will appear.

If you hear the alert tone for only once, it may be a false alarm but possibly pulsed radar or VG-2 nearby; when this happens, proceed with caution. However, when the tone instantly begins and repeating rapidly, you need to be in full alert as the likely hood of a radar nearby is very high.

When approaching a bridge or hill and you hear a tone that repeats slowly and then speeds up sharply as you reach it, be on high alert as there is probably police radar beyond the hill or bridge.

Well, the morale of the story is, whenever you hear any alert tone, proceed with caution and be alert. After all, the whole objective of you getting the radar/laser detector is to avoid getting any ticket from the police. However, having this equipment does that give you the license to speed and endanger your life and the lives of others.

From my experience, the Cobra ESD 7570 is effective in detecting radar signal giving you the protection against the police. However, for the laser signal, once the device picks up the signal, it is already too late and you’re busted.

The Cobra ESD 7570 also has the ability to pick up safety signal from emergency vehicles alerting you of any incoming or nearby emergency vehicle. When that happens, be on guard and pull over to the right side of the road and allow the emergency vehicle to pass.

Do take note that the Cobra detector is designed to detect instant-on speed monitoring signal which can appear anywhere and anytime; when that happens, you should act appropriately and take the right action.

From my experience, the detector has different range when on highway and in city mode. On highway, the estimated range is between ½ mile to ¼ mile giving you sufficient time to react when the alert comes on. When on city mode, the range is approximately 4 to 5 blocks.

Do take note that if you are approaching hills or curves, the range will be cut down significantly as the signal is being blocked and hence you may have less time to react.

What Cobra ESD 7570 Can’t Detect?

Cobra ESD 7570 specs

Despite having the ability to detect radar and laser, the Cobra ESD 7570 can’t detect any police patrol car following behind you. As long as the police don’t switch on the radar, your detector is useless and you’ll still get a ticket as the police can use the speedometer as evidence if you speed.

Is it Legal?

So is your Cobra ESD 7570 legal? Under the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), three band frequencies, namely X, K and Ka have been approved for use by speed monitoring radar equipment. The frequencies used in this detector are approved frequencies.

The Communications Acts of 1924 also guarantee your right to receive radio transmissions on any frequency. Local laws that contravene this Act, while illegal, may be enforced by your local law enforcement officials until and unless they are prohibited form doing so by federal court action.

Preventing Theft

To prevent your radar detector from being stolen, when leaving your park, do not leave the detector open and can be seen by others. Try to conceal or hide the device to prevent any unwanted break-in or theft.

Radar vs Laser

Now there are 2 signals that the Cobra ESD 7570 can detect – radar and laser. From my experience, the detector is effective against radar but not for laser. Once you see the laser display on your unit, it is probably too late to react.

Unlike radar, laser cannot be operated while in motion; you must sit still and operate the laser detector. That is the main reasons why most offices use operating the radar, instead of the laser.

The Cobra ESD 7570 measures 1.3 x 2.8 x 4.1 inches and weighs only 4.3 ounces. It is small and compact and will not block your views when being installed on your windshield or dashboard.

Cobra ESD 7570 Review – Customer Review

At the time of this writing, the rating for the Cobra ESD 7570 is 3.8 out of 5 stars (for Amazon). The rating at Walmart is also quite close at 3.9 star.

Overall, customers are satisfied with the product and most could not believe what they are seeing as the device is proven to work and best of all, they get it at a very good price.  Most think that this is an inferior product after looking at the price. However, after using it, all the skepticism is gone and they are very satisfied with what they’ve purchased.

  • User friendly
  • Pick up all the common frequencies/bands used by police
  • Value for money
  • 1 year warranty

  • Ineffective against laser
  • May not hear the alert tone if the radio is loud
  • Can’t protect you if the officer’s car is following behind
  • Frequent false alerts at city area
  • No GPS
  • No database for red light and speed camera

With the ability to detect all the radar and laser signals used by the enforcement officers, VG-2 alert features and the ability to detect emergency vehicle, the Cobra ESD 7570 will be very useful in protecting you from getting any speeding ticket. Although the device is not effective against laser and officers following behind you car, nevertheless, it will save you lots of money when you are on the road. If this device saves you once, you already get your money back; imagine the cost to you if you don’t have this device.

Overall, what you pay for is what you get. The price is great but there are also many complaints about it giving multiple false alarms especially driving through densely populated area. If you can afford a higher budget, check out the Cobra XRS 9370  or the Cobra XRS 9745 which can detect a lot more signals compared to the Cobra ESD 7570.

Note: Owning this device does not give you’re the license to speed as doing so may endanger your own life and the lives of others.
